4.7% of Americans Near Poverty

According to a new report by the Census Bureau, 14.7 million Americans (4.7% of the national population) lived just above the poverty line as of 2012.  The challenges faced by this group are significant, particularly because so many of the social programs that provided a “safety net” have lost their funding over the last ten years. For example, unemployment benefits play a major role in providing a minimal standard of living for many of these individuals and families – and those benefits have been intermittently cut over the last several years.
